Coiling Ropes
World Scout Badge (WSB)
1. Thumb Knot
Stopper knot.
2. Reef Knot
The knot is tied by the 'left over right' followed by the 'right over left' method and it is snugged up by pulling on the ends. It can be loosened easily by taking an end and a standing part of one rope in each hand and pushing the bights apart.
The knot is used in all first aid work or for joining two pieces of string or cord or rope of equal thickness.
3. Clove Hitch
The knot is the start and finish of some lashings and is used in gadget making as well as pioneering. The two methods are one of the few ways to tie this important knot.
4. Round Turn and Two Half Hitches
The knot is a simple method of fastening a rope to a spar, ring or another rope. It is especially useful for towing purposes.
Please note that the hitches has to be tightened all the way. It was not tightened in the video for demonstration purposes only.
5. Sheetbend
Two ropes which may be of varying thickness are needed to tie this knot. Please note that the correct way to tighten the knot after forming and intersecting the loop and the rope is to maintain both ends of the rope on the left and pull the two ends on the right.
The knot is mainly used to join two rope ends of unequal length, the right rope jams against the left loop to prevent both ends from slipping.
